Siemens has been awarded a major order for thirty-three KMP 450 coal mill gear units by L&T-MHI Boilers Private Limited. The Indian company, a joint venture by Larson & Toubro (L&T) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), is based in Mumbay and specializes in the construction of energy-efficient power plants. The Siemens gear units are being used in projects run by the Mahagenco power company, which is owned by the Indian Government. These include the extension of a coal-fired power plant in Rajpura, Punjab. Here, they are being used to grind coal in vertical mills, which represents the first stage of energy generation at a coal-fired power plant.

The vertical mills are used to grind lignite or anthracite coal and to pulverize it to a very fine grain. During this process, the gear unit transmits power from the motor and reduces its speed to the required mill speed. Given that a robust and reliable gear unit constitutes such an important part of the vertical mill, L&T-MHI Boilers Private Limited opted for the KMP 450 coal mill gear unit from Siemens. Empirical evidence from over 4500 reference systems has shown that the vertical mill gear units are notable for an extremely long service life. The gear units consist of a bevel stage and a planetary gear unit and have a torque range of 19 to 670 kNm. They are produced and assembled in India at the Siemens factory in Chennai. The key factor in the decision to award the order was the attractive price/performance ratio that could be achieved by relying on local Siemens production capacity.
